Book Review: Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Hex Hall (Hex Hall #1)

by
Rachel Hawkins
Genre: Young-adult, Fantasy, Romance
Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father—an elusive European warlock—only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tag-along ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

4star
This was a fun read. Easy going, not much of a happening, a light read if I must say, but surprisingly good. You see, I am not that hard to please. My stars are not that hard to get, I am generous, *Snickers*. As long as the book can keep me occupied and the heroine and other characters don't make me want to pull my hair out of frustration, then I wouldn't hesitate to give all the stars I can. And Sophie's one of those character you would root for, although I must admit that I wanted to slap her on the face on some times, just a few times.

Sophie Mercer is a witch. She lives with the human world* if I must say, with her mother. She has never met her father, they only talked through phone and emails. Every witches comes to power when they turn 12, and Sophie has been pretty much thrilled with it. However, the night of their prom, she has made a spell to help a bullied classmate get a prom partner, things just didn't turn out as expected. Even Sophie thinks so.

"It's okay baby!"he shouted after her.
"I don't need eyes to see you! I see you with the eyes of my heart, Felicia! My HEART!"
Great. Not only was my spell too strong, it was also lame.

She was exile at Hecate hall aka Hex Hall, because of the said incident where she needs to stay until she turns 18. That's where things started to get exciting. There has been someone attacking students on Hex hall and her room mate turned bestfriend vampire, who's so into Pink was the prime suspect.

"The "Holy-crap-that's-a-lot-of-pink" Zone would have been a more accurate description"

I don't know, Jenna, seems like a very nice friend, but when it was revealed that she loves pink.. I can't help but remember this evil woman:

I really can't help but giggle, every time I get to read Sophie's inner monologue.

"Two days later,Holly was dead." Chaston said, her voice dark and somber. I waited for another crack of thunder, thinking one surely had to follow a statement like that.

See? How can you not like someone who can be sarcastic internally and a witch with magical spells that tried to stop a werewolf's attack by screaming "BAD DOG!". If I would have given the chance, I would definitely choose Sophie's witch's ability rather than Harry Potter's.. Why? well for one thing, I can't memorize SPELLS! Also, Sophie didn't require wand. I am really careless, I can loose everything without even knowing, its like a talent!
Anyway, as for other characters, I have mixed feelings for Archer. I know, he's cute, strong and seem genuinely attracted to Sophie, but that doesn't make him any less than jerk in my eyes. Not really because of him (view spoiler) but because he is like in a relationship with perfect Elodie, and seem to be screwing with Sophie. No matter how bitchy Elodie is, and no matter how attractive you are with a boy, that doesn't give you a right to go around kissing someone who's in a relationship. If you think, you're falling for another and you're not happy anymore, then leave! Err.. Sorry, just get carried away, its just that I had enough of jerks. I hope he just get to redeem himself on the next book.

Callahan aka Cal on the other hand, the Hex Hall's Groundskeeper, seems to get to me, considering his little exposures on this book. I hope you're not imagining this guy:

Although, Hagrid is very huggable Cal, as per Sophie's description, is like an Abercrombie & Fitch models. He is a white warlock that can heal. Cal and Sophie, seems to be more suitable, atleast for me. *Wink

Now, I may have read this book a little late, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to read the next book!.
